![]() Hi CaliberX! Welcome to the wonderful timesink that is (modded) Skyrim! I've clocked way too many hours on different playthroughs, and while I miss some of the mechanics (and writing) of Morrowind, Skyrim is easily my second-favorite of the entire series. I've been all responsible, having bought a house and refurbished it, adopted a child (not sure how that's exactly responsible - since I'm out day and night risking life and limb - I can only hope she learns to cook quickly - well there's plenty of food in the cupboard, no one seems to lack for food in this land, well until I pass by and grab it all). I've looked through a few forums and the wiki, but mainly to get a handle on alchemy and enchanting. I can offer you no insights (my character development is somewhat organic: loosely based on what I'm using - some weapon, armour skills, with some lockpicking and sneaking skills, I'm only level 10). Is sneak heavily affected by the armour you wear? I bought it oppotunistically, then recognised that I was still not in the frame of mind for an RPG! However, I've played it the last few nights (whilst rudely neglecting Eve and tanks) I've decided upfront I cannot be arsed with being a wizard and taken to stalking about with a bow (though still clanking around in steel armour). ![]() I picked it up around Christmas, in the Steam Sale. I've also just decided to start playing the game (well I started on Sunday night). Without abusing the Alchemy/Enchanting feedback loop (yes, there is one).Īs far as mods goes, the most critical ones are the Skyrim Script Extender (or SKSE), SkyUI, and the various Unofficial Patches. With Smithing 100 and some Fortify Smithing effects (courtesy of, say, a high Enchanting level creating custom Fortify Smithing gear), you can create items that are several times more powerful than unupgraded Daedric gear. Crafting skills are, as usual, the key to ultimate power - Alchemy is fairly solid, high-end Enchanting can make some downright crazy items, but the real offender in Skyrim is smithing - unlike in previous games, you can smith and upgrade your own gear (and also upgrade items you find) - and the higher your Smithing skill, the better the upgrade. Pure magic doesn't scale well in vanilla, and can be a bit difficult past the early levels. You also gain a perk point, which can be spent buying perks in the various skill trees.Ī few general notes: Archery is powerful, and when combined with stealth can make for a great sneaky sniper playthrough. All three start at 100, and every time you gain a level you gain +10 points in one of them (of your choice). Skills are mostly the same (there's 18 of them, split evenly between combat/magic/skill archetypes, raise them by using them, finding skill books, paying a trainer, or occasionally as quest rewards), but beyond that it's completely different - the only attributes you've got are Health, Magicka, and Stamina. Are they better with an xbox controller?Īs far as leveling and stuff, they basically completely trashed the leveling system from previous games. Mods that optimize it to run smoother, on the other hand, would be awesome.Īlso, I've noticed the controls seem a little weird. Note I'm playing on a laptop that already has a small bit of trouble running the game, so mods that make it more beautiful, while appreciated, probably aren't going to do any good. So avoiding spoilers as to quests and such as much as possible, anyone care to impart some advice on character-building/mods that you think would make for a great/the best play experience. ![]() But I can resist the siren song that is Elder Scrolls for only so long! Having played previous ES games though, I know that usually 1) the leveling system requires you to go in knowing what the hell you're doing from the start and 2) mods are usually one of the biggest attractions to the game. I've been hesitant about playing it for a while, at least in part because I'm not sure I have the time to sink into the game to enjoy it properly. If this is your first night, you have to wrestle the dragon.Įrr, that is, I'm finally going to give a go at playing me some Skyrim.
